At a hearing centering on the US government’s oversight for research involving PPPs, White House COVID-19 testing advisor Tom Inglesby recommended that scientists be required to explain both the goal of the research and why these goals cannot be met through safer methods. Currently, the Department of Health and Human Services oversees a committee intended to provide greater oversight for these particularly dangerous experiments. Inglesby and others contend that the committee is ineffective and in need of an overhaul. Increased transparency surrounding gain of function research is essential.
